What they did not want you to ever find out is that your generation, the generation born between 1980-1995, actually outnumbers the Baby Boomers. They knew that if you ever turned your eye towards political reform, you could change the world. They tried to keep you sated on vapid television shows and vapid music. They cut off your education and fed you brain candy. They took away your music and gave you Top Ten pop stations. They cut off your art and replaced it with endless reality shows for you to plug into, hoping you would sit quietly by as they ran the world. We as a society are only as strong as our weakest link. Give ‘em hell, kids.

I’m going to state this plainly. I’m sick of hearing the religious or politicians talk about a “War on Religion”. Let me break down these two very simple ideas for you. First is Freedom of Religion. This means that we can all believe anything that we want (Thisincludes those of us who do not believe in gods at all). It’s just as much our right to not believe as it is it for you to believe. Pretty simple. What you believe should not place you in a lower class than anyone else. Period. Now the second, the separation of church and stateTHE CONSTITUTION STATES“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” This means that regardless of what you believe you can not use those beliefs as a basis for making political decisions, and that the government can not stop you from exercising your own faith. With all of that being said, there are some issues (I’m focusing mainly on civil rights issues) that certain religions see as “wrong” or “sinful”. This really only matters to those who have chosen to follow that faith. No matter what religion (or lack thereof) you are vastly outnumbered in this world by those who think differently or even believe that you are wrong. So how does it make any sense AT ALL to use your religion as a gauge for how everyone else should live their lives? There is not one, and only oneright way for the entirety of the world to live their life. So there isn’t so much of a “War on Religion”, as there is a growing urge for people to stop trying to force their beliefs upon, and take the rights away from, those who believe differently. I speak out because it needs to be known that one group of people should not dictate how the rest of us live, and I’m proud that others are doing so as well. This last little bit is personal opinion but if your god or holy book looks down upon, promotes hatred of, or degrades, a group of human beings simply for the fact that they are different, or are outside of what is “ideal”, than your god is a hateful bigot. If you choose to follow these “teachings”, or buy into any kind of hatred handed to you in whatever form, than you have chosen to be a hateful bigot as well. We are all members of the same species and should find more ways to love and bring each other together, and fewer ways to tear each other apart.

Phonebook carvings by Cuban artist Alex Queral. Finally, somebody put phonebooks to good use.

Taking an ordinary phone book, Alex Queral carves a face into this object of so many faceless names. With the book, a very sharp X-ACTO® knife, a little pot of acrylic medium to set detail areas and a great deal of talent, Queral literally peels away the pages like the skin of an onion to reveal the portrait within.
